Aboriginal Justice Inquiry (AJI)
Commissioned by the Manitoba government in 1988, after the murder of Helen Betty Osborne in 1971 and J.J. Harper in 1988, the AJI has been foundational in shaping advancements to address systemic racism in the criminal justice system in Manitoba. For the ISB, key linkages to the AJI include Elders as important healers and medicine people to provide healing and wellness services to staff, families and community; greater support for employment opportunities for Indigenous people, and particularly Indigenous women, to change how Indigenous women are viewed in society, with the ultimate goal of improving low rates of Indigenous staff at the senior and middle management levels in Manitoba Justice.
