United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP)

On June 21, 2021, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act came into effect. This legislation commits to implementing UNDRIP as key step in improving the Government of Canada’s relationship with Indigenous peoples. ISB understands the importance of our Indigenous people’s history and respects the rights of Indigenous peoples by supporting religious traditions and teachings including ceremony, medicines, and health practices within the workplace.

UNDRIP sets out the rights of Indigenous Peoples around the world. The guiding human rights instruments under UNDRIP includes declarations, conventions and treaties intended to define and uphold human rights in international law. The Declaration contains 46 articles containing collective and individual rights. It identifies governments as responsible for upholding special protections and rights related to the survival, dignity and well-being of Indigenous peoples, as well as the right to maintain distinct political, legal, economic, social and cultural institutions.
