October 4, 2024

Two probable human WNV cases were reported since the last update. Six confirmed and six probable WNV human cases have been reported in 2024. Sixteen WNV-positive birds and one WNV-positive horse have also been identified this season.

Adult mosquito surveillance has concluded for 2024.

With the cooler temperatures and shortening days, Culex tarsalis activity is low. The risk of WNV exposure is minimal, although not zero. Manitobans may consider taking precautions to reduce their exposure to mosquito bites, particularly on warm days and in the early evening. This includes:

  • reducing the amount of time spent outdoors during peak mosquito hours between dusk and dawn;
  • using appropriate mosquito repellent;
  • wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing with long sleeves and pant legs, and
  • maintaining door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes.
